Panel Discussion -October 24 at 6 pm, ‘By Any Means Necessary: Boston Artist-Run Spaces Through the Decades,’ in conjunction with the exhibition ‘Under a Dismal Boston Skyline,’ at Stone Gallery, Boston University, Boston, MA USA

October 15, 2018

Boston has long been a vibrant center for artistic experimentation, due in no small part to the artist-led spaces and organizations that have come and gone over the decades. Despite many challenges and immense changes to the city’s cultural and social infrastructure, each has left a significant impact on the local scene. This panel brings together organizers of alternative art spaces founded in different decades that worked outside of the city’s cultural mainstream. Each of these spaces were created around specific communities of artists and in response to changing economic and cultural conditions. This panel aims to correct what can be a short memory in Boston’s artistic history, and to draw parallels in the conversations, practices, and challenges that have impacted the Boston art scene from the 1970s to the present.

Panel participants include Marilyn Arsem (Mobius), Timothy Bailey (Oni Gallery), Meg Rotzel (Berwick Research Institute), and Mike Carroll (11th Hour Gallery).
