This piece was made in an afternoon of open air performances.
On the last day of the festival we traveled by bus into the country, joined by many younger artists of Minsk who had attended the festival. It was a picnic and afternoon of open air performances by both the Minsk artists as well as the visiting artists.
With the assistance of the Museum staff, I had prepared a vinyl tablecloth that I had purchased in Poland. Pictured on it was a photographic spread of breakfast foods of breads, rolls, cereals and fruits. On the other side we pasted maps of the world, of the USA and of Belarus and the surrounding countries.
I spread the tablecloth on the ground, with the images of the food on top, invited people to gather around it, and asked the question, “Are you hungry?” (“Vy golodny?”).”What will you eat?”
As people pointed out an item on the tablecloth, I cut it out with scissors. Handing it to them, I asked, “Where will you go?” (“Kuda by pojdete?”). Turning over the image of the food they found a section of the map had been cut out as well, and so they examined it to decipher what part of the world they might visit one day.
The action continued amidst much laughter, a discussion of travel, and visiting artists identifying the parts of the world from which they had come.
